“Blessed Are the Merciful”
FOCUS
“Mercy refused and love took my place, there on the cross where justice met grace - mercy refused to let me die, Jesus the Lamb was crucified - though rightfully death wanted me, mercy refused.”
Those words from our good brother & friend David Baroni’s song called “Mercy Refused” help set the stage for this morning’s message. They remind us that mercy refuses to demand justice but rather seeks to withhold the payment, punishment or penalty for wrongs done. Easy to type / important with which to wrestle … most especially in light of this fifth beatitude from The Sermon on the Mount.
The Merciful …
1. are passing on God’s mercy to them.
Whether they know it or not, that’s exactly what they’re doing.
Matthew 5:7a
2. will be shown mercy for having done so.
Not unlike the reciprocity re: forgiveness, mercy will be shown to the merciful.
Matthew 5:7b Matthew 6:14 Colossians 3:13
Making It Real
1] Do you see the simplicity, significance & beauty of this?
2] Will you embrace the reciprocity of this reality & get busy being merciful?
Action Step
Write down three ways you can be merciful in ways you haven’t been lately.
